Jake
We adopted our amazing dog Jake about 2 months ago.  Jake had a really rough go at it.  He had been hit by a car and was heartworm positive when he found his way to the shelter.

My husband and I volunteer at the shelter and decided to foster Jake.  We were his foster parents for exactly 4 days when we decided that he must join our other animals.  Jake is our 1st dog and he is amazing.  He is such a loving and loyal animal.  He follows my husband and I everywhere and is starting to become buddies with the cats.  He loves playing outside and taking rides in the car to his “grandparents” house.  He is amazing with my nieces and nephew and loves when we have company over.

My boyfriend and I adopted Gracie in July of 2006 when she was 8 weeks old.  She was there with 1 other sister and 2 other brothers.  Her mom was a Dutch Shepherd, but you guys were not sure what her dad was.  We think she might be part chow, because she has a black spot on her tongue, but to me she definitely looks like a shepherd.  We sat there for about an hour and just watched the litter and Gracie was so laid-back and would come to you if you went to her first.  The others would jump up on you and were aggressive.  After scoping out all the pups we decided on Gracie.  She has brought so much joy to our lives and she is the best dog anyone could ask for.  She is very submissive, which we don't know why because we got her when she was 8 weeks old, so we know she was not abused.  We did take her to puppy training when she was younger and the trainer said that can be hereditary.  We have a fenced in back yard and Gracie loves to play ball, but she also will sit in the front yard with us and stays right by our side and will not run away, she is a very well trained and mannered dog.  My boyfriend has a 7 year old daughter and I have a young niece and 3 young nephews and she is so good with all of them.  She will just lick them and play real gentle with them even if they pull her tail.  She loves to go on car rides, every other weekend we have to drive pretty far to pick up my boyfriends daughter and she loves it.  Gracie is a blessing, she is like our child, she sleeps with us in bed and is very spoiled.  I can't imagine our lives with out her and I want to thank SSASI for taking in and giving your time to these animals.

Thanks so much for my baby girl!!

Abbie

My parents and I adopted Abigale on July 3rd, 2007. I, being the only child, have never experienced having a puppy before, and this was so very exciting for me. I had looked up the Southside Animal Shelter after numerous efforts to find the puppy of my dreams and to convince my mom that I was ready to be a mommy after 11 years of taking care of our cat. We decided to check the place out, and knowing my mom her words to me were, "We're only looking, so don't think you're going to sucker me into buying a dog." My mom doesn't really even like dogs, but when we saw Abbie all bundled up in her cage, we both fell in love. Abbie looked at us with her big brown eyes and that was all I needed. Mom looked at me and said, "Not today", and I almost cried. We had carried her around and spent some time with her. My mom took Abbie and I's picture the day we first saw her to show my dad. Needless to say, we put a downpayment at the shelter and picked her up a week later. Now she's happily living here in a big house with a big backyard for her to run around. She doesn't even need a leash, and she loves the sprinkler. I think she's going to grow up to be one happy dog.

Diesel

Diesel is one of Blondies pups. We adopted him at 8 weeks and he is now 6 months and has brought so much happiness to our lives. Thanks you for doing what you do or we wouldn't have him.

Red

"Red" was first spotted at the "Pet Fest" (at the Indianapolis Fairgrounds) on May 6, 2007. He was in a crate, as were about a hundred other dogs in the building. Lisa noticed him because of his german shepherd looks and calm demeanor. His home was the Southside Animal Shelter. Red gave Lisa kisses, just like Jake used to do. Lisa had them take Red out of the cage and she spent a couple minutes with him. She talked with the gal in charge, Rosie. She moved on to look at other dogs that afternoon, but the dog named Red stuck in her mind.

The next weekend Lisa, Marg and Bear piled in the car for a trip down to Southside to see Red again. He was playing in a larged fenced area with a few other dogs when they arrived. He was nervous as the worker brought him out of the run. Lisa, Marg and Bear walked around the property with Red. Red seemed very nervous, but very sweet. He and Bear got along great. Lisa decided that this was the dog for her. After a little negotiation it was decided that she would pick Red up in a week, on the 18th. Lisa was going to be on vacation the following week, and she thought this would be a good time to welcome Red into her life.

Lisa left work on Friday and drove down to pick up Red, the dog soon to be known as Red Rover.
Read Lisa's account of the first couple of days they spent together.
